Having gone where no Great Oak tennis team has ever gone before; this year's varsity finishes the season strong with a league championship under their belts.
However the journey was anything but easy. With numerous injuries and a challenging schedule they started the year fighting. Yet in the end, varsity was able to pull off an undefeated season, maintaining a positive and confident attitude throughout the year; in spite of losing the CIF semifinal match, 7-11.
From the start of the season our boys had a target on their backs. Having been ranked #2 in division 3 CIF, Great Oak was the team to beat, but in the end we brought the league title home. "I was nervous and excited knowing that we would be more competitive than last year" sophomore Harrison Carrillo told me. Nonetheless, the nerves didn't stop them from playing great tennis and having a marvelous year filled with improvement and good times.
However, none of this would have been possible without the dedication and passion coach Ray Fisher has for his team and the game. He challenges his players to improve both on varsity and JV, and as a result the tennis program has a lot of depth. "My goal as a coach," he said, "is to build the program. I want to make my players the best they can be." His main focus is to motivate his players giving them confidence while at the same time reminding them to be humble.
